Facts On St Maarten - St Martin
This enchanting
island is located near Latitude 18°North and Longitude 63°W.
Local time is equal
to GMT time - 4 hours.
St
Martin is listed in the Guiness Books of Records as being the
world's smallest island governed by two different governments.
St
Martin is 85 km² or 33 square miles. It is seperated by the
French Side to the North and the Dutch side to the South. The
French Side covering a larger surface.
There are approximetaly
66 beaches around the island. Temperature ranges from 22°C
(72°F) to 32°C (90°F) with sea temperature averaging
27°C (80°F).
From November to June
corresponds to the rainy season and from June to November is much
dryer and warm. This same period corresponds, however, to the
North Atlantic Hurricane Season.
The highest elevation
is Pic Paradis with 424 m (1400 feet).
The soil is essantially
composed of granidiorite structure forming the Eastern 2 thirds
of the island and the Western part (Low Lands) is formed of Limestone.
Over
87 Nationalities are found living in harmony on this small island.
The 2002 population count was 62 000.
The
island has divers types of cuisine, water sports, hicking and
rich in historical and archeological sites.
